What time of day has the best chance of a full practice?
Morning sessions are ideal, as they are minimally impacted by heat and comply with UIL WBGT guidelines. For uninterrupted practice, morning is your best option.
The chart below shows how outdoor workouts would be impacted each day from June 1 – June 30, 2024 based on the current UIL Heat Stress Activity Guidelines for Region 1 (Amarillo, Canyon, Lubbock).
This graph displays data for June 2024, showing how outdoor workout conditions vary throughout the day based on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) zones.
The horizontal axis represents different times of day, from 6 AM to 8 AM.
The vertical bars for each time slot are divided into colored sections, with each color corresponding to a WBGT zone as defined by UIL WBGT Activity Guidelines:
Green: Normal Activities
Yellow: Use Discretion
Orange: 2 Hrs. Practice Max
Red: 1 Hr. Practice Max
Black: No Outdoor Workouts
The numbers within each colored section indicate how many days out of the 30 days in June fall into that particular WBGT zone at that specific time.
For example, at 6 AM:
26 days allow for normal activities
4 days recommend using discretion
This graph helps coaches and athletes plan when it’s safest to conduct outdoor practices in June, showing how heat stress risk changes throughout the day.
Morning sessions are ideal, as they are minimally impacted by heat and comply with UIL WBGT guidelines. For uninterrupted practice, morning is your best option.
Between 12 PM and 6 PM, the optimal time for a full 2-hour practice is between 12 PM and 3 PM, with 1 day resulting in stoppage of practice and 2 occurrences being shortened to 1 hour practice.
In this date range, at least one practice would have been canceled or halted due to WBGT Activity Guidelines, occurring from 1 PM to 5PM.
Additionally, 3 practices would need to be shortened to 1 hour, with most times allowing for a minimum of 2-hour practices.
